While on our recent trip to Wellfleet , MA – the fabulous community near the tip of Cape Cod – Sophie and I stumbled into a newly-opened antique shop located in basically a mini-strip mall next to a Dunkin’ Donuts.
“An antique shop <pause> in a strip mall?” I know! But we just had to check it out. It turned out to be Billingsgate Art & Antiques which had just opened for business a few days before. At first we were not sure of the place, as it had obviously just opened and had not quite yet settled into the space. However, even the most casual review of the merchandise for sale made it obvious that this was going to be a special place.
Sophie enjoyed the fine jewelry, while our weekend companion from New York spied a chest-of-drawers that she loved. But how to get it from the tip of Cape Cod to the Upper East Side ? No problem, a friend of the curators’ overheard and said she would be happy to drop it off on her way to Pennsylvania . Yep, it is that kind of place.
The more time we spent here, the more treasures we discovered. We also made a new friend in Antoinette Berger, a partner in the new venture, who told us all about her merchandise and plans for the store.
We added one more place on our growing list of “must visit” places in Wellfleet.
No website for Billingsgate yet, but we will keep an eye out.
