Cooper1I have written before about my love for the V&A, the Victoria & Albert museum in London, a space dedicated to design. Likewise, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York is dedicated to fine design.  A branch of the Smithsonian since 1967, Cooper-Hewitt is housed in the landmark Andrew Carnegie Mansion on Fifth Avenue in New York City. I have Cooper-Hewitt on my list to visit as soon as it finishes the major renovation is currently undergoing.

Meanwhile, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum has a wonderful online shop that offers great and unique products that hint at the world of design the museum showcases.

About The shop of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum: “Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution is the only museum in the nation devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. The Museum presents compelling perspectives on the impact of design on daily life through active educational and curatorial programming. It is the goal of The Shop to create a true design destination for its patrons, offering a selection of works by established and emerging designers that will surprise, delight and inspire.”
The shop has some cool things like the Marcel Wanders Birdhouse (above right):  “A bold, bright, modern bird feeder from celebrated designer Marcel Wanders. Give your feathered friends the best with this minimalist modern birdhouse. A porcelain plate serves as the base for this bird house, because no avian should have to eat off plastic.”

cooper2The Cooper-Hewitt shop also offers a great line of design-oriented books, and even a nice collection of items for the desk and office – like this Airliner desk ornament (right):  “Oh, how wonderful to fly this beautiful flying machine! Made of solid wood, Playsam’s sleek Airliner has earned the prestigious mark of Excellent Swedish Design. An original and exclusive baby, birthday or business gift, the Airliner captures the imagination of old and young alike.”
