spccIt’s April! Well, at least the calendar says it is even if the snow cover here in New Hampshire makes it look more like early March. In any case, spring is inevitable and I am busy planning my container gardens, which why today’s book is perfect: Small-Space Container Gardens: Transform Your Balcony, Porch, or Patio with Fruits, Flowers, Foliage, and Herbs by Fern Richardson.

I have a lot of space here, but I still prefer to run my garden in containers – mostly because I can’t control my groundhog friends from dining on all my plants. I love having clusters of containers here and there with my herbs, vegetables and flowers. In her book, Small-Space Container Gardens, Ms. Richardson overs some great tips and ideas for small spaces and containers that I had not thought of before and I am eager to try this season.

About Small-Space Container Gardens: Transform Your Balcony, Porch, or Patio with Fruits, Flowers, Foliage, and Herbs by Fern Richardson: “This exciting guide layers practical gardening fundamentals with creative solutions that encourage thinking outside the pot. Maybe this means repurposing a shipping pallet to create a colorful vertical garden of nasturtiums and lobelia. Or simply seeing walls, rafters, railings, and everything in-between as fair game. It’s in these containers–traditional or not–that you’ll cultivate your own food, attract beneficial insects, grow flowering vine privacy screens, and so much more. You’ll also learn how to tackle unique challenges, like windy conditions when gardening several stories above street level, and how to care for plants and troubleshoot with the best of them. From design basics to essential plant picks, Small-Space Container Gardens proves you don’t need a yard to have a garden. For anyone who wants more green in their life, it’s time to get out there and start growing.”

It may seem simple and intuitive to create a container garden, and in many ways it is. But it great to have a book like this with an expert offering you tips so you can have a successful garden straight away and not through years of trial and error like me.
