The other day I posted about my recent daytrip to Portland, ME and promised to bring you a few finds from a visit to the city’s Old Port district. As a man of my word – I present a special edition of my Friday Finds – Portland, ME edition…

FF: Sea Bags of Portland

SBHI’ll be honest, before my visit to Portland I had never heard of Sea Bags, but my traveling companion Lynda sure had. Sea Bags is a Portland-based company the upcycles old sails (as in from boats) into a wide range of bags. While walking around the Old Port, Lynda spotted a sign for the home of Sea Bags, right on one of the city’s historic wharves. We made our way to the Sea Bags building and it turns out it was the actual place where they make the bags and they sell a few items out front – a true factory outlet.

About Sea Bags: “At Sea Bags we design and handcraft tote bags and accessories from recycled sails in the heart of Portland, Maine’s working waterfront. Our trademark is registered throughout the world and the quality and the craftsmanship of our bags, as well as the fact that our sails are truly recycled, is unparalleled to any other sail product. Visit us at one of our stores in Portland or Freeport to learn more and browse our unique Sea Bags collection.”

VHTI like Sea Bags’ Vintage Hinckley Tote: “Hinckley sailboats are a piece of Maine heritage and history. The sailboats are known for their advancements and innovations in the yachting world since 1928. They have classic shape, dramatic lines, and inner strength of a Maine boat building tradition. Hinkley manufactured many war designed boats and at the end of World War II, Hinckley’s contributions totaled nearly 40% of all war boats built in Maine. Made with recycled sail featuring hand-spliced rope handles, clasp closure, designed for shoulder carry.”

Sea Bags are available at many fine retailers and on their website.

FF: Portland Home Furnishings Shop: Asia West

ASIAWESTPortland’s Old Port is full of great shops. One shop that I enjoyed poking around was Asia West – which offers great decorative pieces from all over the world.

About Portland’s Asia West: “Asia West offers unique furniture, accessories, antiques, and one-of-a-kind accents and treasures from around the globe. Now in our 20th year of business, we continue to operate with the same objective as when we opened in 1992…searching countries like India, Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam, and Indonesia for beautiful artistic furniture and crafts and bringing them back to our customers in Portland. Asia West heartily supports fair trade and is proud to offer our customers great value. Please let us know if you have any questions or would like us to help you find that special something. In addition to our large store, we also have a 6000sq foot warehouse filled with an ever-changing collection of eclectic furnishings.”

Asia West has many cool items like these Assorted Iron Trunks.

FF: Motifs of Portland

motifsAnother great shop in Portland’s Old Port is Motifs, which offers a great selection of “home accents” and is great place to find the perfect gift for just about anyone.

About Motifs of Portland: “Motifs’ shelves are filled with distinctive and affordable home accents, such as pillows, glassware, storage containers, clocks, and decorative signs and hooks. Motifs is located at 221 Commercial St., Portland, ME.

FF: Reisenthel Bags

REISSea Bags are great and are a nice way to shop local (well, if you are in Maine). However, another great way to shop is to use a bag or basket made in Germany from Reisenthel. I first spotted a Reisenthel shopping basket at a shop in Portland and it was the perfect gift I was looking for to send to a special friend.

After doing a little research, I discovered that Reisenthel has a great line of shopping baskets and other bags and carryall items for just about every activity.

I like Reisenthel’s original and traditional Carry Bag: “Unique in form and function – the carrybag has hit its mark since 2003. To the market, the park or the office: No matter where you take it, the carrybag is a true classic.”

See all the great products of Reisenthel here.
