tjWhen it comes to show business legends of the past half century, none fascinate me more than say Tina Turner and Sir Tom Jones. Ms. Turner has told her story a few times over the years, but until now, Sir Tom has not. As he says in the notes for his new first-ever autobiography: “For a lot of years, I’ve answered a lot of questions, but have never told my story before.”

Finally, and thankfully for us, Sir Tom has put his story into his new book, Over the Top and Back: The Autobiography, and it is as wonderful and amazing as you want it to be.

From humble beginning in a How Green was my Valley-ish coal mining town in Wales, to the top of the pop charts in the swinging sixties and beyond, Sir Tom’s story is the story of a man who has persevered against all odds.

About Over the Top and Back: The Autobiography by Sir Tom Jones: “Across six decades, Sir Tom Jones has maintained a vital career in a risky, unstable business notorious for the short lives of its artists. With a drive that comes from nothing but the love for what he does, he breaks through and then wrestles with the vagaries of the music industry, the nature of success and its inevitable consequences. Having recorded an expansive body of work and performed with fellow artists from across the spectrum and across every popular music genre, from rock, pop and dance to country, blues and soul, the one constant throughout has been his unique musical gifts and unmistakable voice. But how did a boy from a Welsh coal-mining family attain success across the globe? And how has he survived the twists and turns of fame and fortune to not only stay exciting, but actually become more credible and interesting with age? In this, his first ever autobiography, Tom revisits his past and tells the tale of his journey from wartime Pontypridd to LA and beyond. He reveals the stories behind the ups and downs of his fascinating and remarkable life, from the early heydays to the subsequent fallow years to his later period of artistic renaissance. It’s the story nobody else knows or understands, told by the man who lived it, and written the only way he knows how: simply and from the heart. Raw, honest, funny and powerful, this is a memoir like no other from one of the world’s greatest ever singing talents.”

Sir Tom is still going strong at age 75 and remarkably, considering his sex-symbol image over the years, has been happily married to the same woman for 58 of those years – definitely a side to him that is little known but told sweetly in this book. Thanks you Sir Tom for sharing your story at long last.

c1About the Cider Spices Wassail Kit from Oliver Pluff and Co.:

“Wassail (Middle English ‘wæs hæl’ – ‘be you healthy’) refers both to the salute ‘Waes Hail’ and to the drink of wassail, a hot mulled cider drunk as part of wassailing, an English ritual intended to ensure a good apple harvest the following year. Historically, the drink is a mulled cider, mulled beer, or mead, made with sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg and topped with toast. A group then sings: ‘Old Apple tree, old apple tree, we’ve come to wassail thee, To bear and to bow apples enow, Hats full, caps full, three bushel bags full, Barn floors full and a little heap under the stairs.’ Hand Blended and Packaged by Oliver Pluff & Co. in Charleston, South Carolina.”
