onionI’m all about soup these days as the days grow shorter and colder. Give me a recipe for soup that is as easy as plopping everything into a slow cooker and I am a happy camper. Which is why I like this recipe for Slow-Cooker French Onion Soup I found in All Recipes magazine.

ff2Meanwhile, the fine folks at Formaggio Kitchen have a lovely online shop where you can purchase items from their world class Charcuterie, like their Charcuterie Sampler.

About the Charcuterie Sampler from Formaggio Kitchen: “Julie, our in-house charcutière transforms various meats into delectable pâtés, sausages, terrines and cured meats. It was hard to choose, but she put together a selection of some of her favorites. Included in the mix: thick slices of our house smoked bacon.  We think this is just perfect for breakfast or on a BLT.  Also in the sampler – a generous slice of our award-winning rabbit pâté, decadent pork rillettes packed in a reusable Weck jar and two links of rich, and delicately spiced boudin blanc. All of this comes with two of Julie’s favorite charcuterie accompaniments: cornichons and whole grain mustard! All of the charcuterie in this sampler is made with humanely-raised pork (and rabbit) sourced from small, local farms.”

mannersCount me among those who lament the total breakdown of manners in modern society. I think that things go way too fast these days for most people to keep up and adapt behavior even if they want to be mindful of good manners and etiquette. Anyway, the fine folks at Town & Country magazine do their best to help us with a regular series of essays tackling the challenges of manners in the modern world. Now, many of these essays have been collected in a book, Town & Country Manners & Misdemeanors: Notes on Post-Civilized Society edited by Ash Carter.

About Town & Country Manners & Misdemeanors by Ash Carter: “No one understands etiquette better than Town & Country! Following the success of the magazine’s Town & Country Social Graces comes an all-new collection of 27 essays on the challenges of navigating a fast-changing society when the old rules are unenforceable and new ones have yet to be proposed. The writers cover everything from food and money to vice, family, and society.”

If you pick up any tips from these essays, fine. However, it may serve only to raise awareness of the need to return to civility in this era of none, and that is at least a start.

Town & Country Manners & Misdemeanors by Ash Carter is available from Amazon and other fine booksellers.

turk1Seriously, today’s find is the quintessential find for Thanksgiving – the Turkey Timer I found from the fine folks at Kikkerland.

“Great gift for the busy cook. Legs pop when the turkey or chicken is done. Can be re-used up to 300 times, in up to 450 degrees. Made with food-grade silicone and steel. hummEverybody knows how much I love hummus. I am often asked if I make my own hummus and I say no. I mean I have tried to make it and I could never make it as good as the brands I love (Sabra, Trader Joe’s, etc.). Also, having to find tahini and other items not readily sourced from my cupboard, was a pain. Well, I am back at making hummus since I found the super easy recipe for No Fuss Hummus from All Recipes magazine.

“With fresh veggies, this is still a healthy and delicious alternative to potato chips.”
