When it comes to holiday stories, Christmas get all the good stuff. Thanksgiving is left to deal with the old stories of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving and maybe a story about a mouse on the Mayflower. But there are some fine family books out there that tell Thanksgiving stories which may help start a new tradition – like Thanksgiving in the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf and illustrated by Jenny Lovlie.

About Thanksgiving in the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf and Jenny Lovlie: “Every year a family and their friends gather in the woods to celebrate Thanksgiving among the trees. Everyone brings something to share and the day becomes a long celebration of family, faith, and friendship. This picture book includes warm illustrations of people gathered around bonfires and long tables adorned with candles and food, singing songs and sharing laughter. Thanksgiving in the Woods is based on the true story of a family in Upstate New York who has hosted an outdoor Thanksgiving feast in the woods on their farm for over twenty years.”

With a nice story and great full page illustrations, Thanksgiving in the Woods is the perfect bed time story for the kids this week.

Thanksgiving in the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf and Jenny Lovlie is available from Amazon and fine booksellers everywhere.

OK, with Thanksgiving only a few days away I have found a couple of things that will help make sure everything goes perfectly for the big dinner – the Poultry Lifter from the fine folks at Oxo (right) and the Barrel Handle Collection Stainless Steel Potato Masher from Cuisinart.

“Helps transfer poultry without damaging the bird. This Lifter keeps poultry presentation-ready, lifting from underneath the breastbone and keeping the bird secure without piercing it. The non-slip handle and unique hook shape provide leverage for a comfortable grip, and absorbs pressure while lifting poultry up to 24 pounds.”

Well, this is the last update on my 2017 Container Garden – as its season has officially ended. I had some growth well into November and think that is pretty cool. All I have left is some rosemary which I will soon be harvesting and drying out for use all winter. Although the vegetable garden is over – I am stunned to see these flowers on my front stoop still blooming. I’ve had these plants since April and despite a couple of hard frosts they are still making new blooms. #endlesssummer

I am really liking the Fall Leaves Globe I found from the fine folks at Plow and Hearth which would make a great alternative centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table.

FF: The Herb and Salad Chopper from Microplane

I like a nice chopped salad as much as the next guy but never make them at home – too much work. Now the prospect of homemade chopped salad is much closer since I found the elegant Herb and Salad Chopper from the fine folks at Microplane.

About the Herb and Salad Chopper from Microplane:

“The Microplane Herb and Salad Chopper was awarded the 2015 iF Design Award! Grab this convenient and efficient Herb and Salad Chopper when the recipe calls for chopped leafy greens or herbs.  Two ultra-sharp, surgical stainless steel blades are fixed into the handle and retract into the unit for storage.  Three simple steps to activate the blades. Pull the release tab out, then push down on the tab until the blades appear, finally release tab on the other end.  Now the mezzaluna is ready for use.  The double blade provides efficient and effortless mincing or chopping by rocking the unit back and forth over the greens. Super sharp blades easily chop fresh leafy greens, and herbs and mince onions, garlic, chocolate, and nuts.  The handle is shaped to fit the curve of your hand and has a soft-touch grip making it comfortable to use.”

From the earliest days of Lost Cowboy I have been relating tales about the family heirloom turkey platter that is the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving dinner. There is a long history of folklore surrounding gravy boats in my life – something about my Aunt forgetting to serve gravy with the turkey one year and another misguided gift from a friend – long stories for another time. But with the biggest gravy day of the year coming up next week, it is a good idea to have a nice way to serve it, and there is no better way to serve your Thanksgiving gravy than with the Pewter Stoneware Sauce Boat I found from the fine folks at Juliska.
