A good place to reach the way too many kids who live in poverty in this country is in school. The fine folks at Communities in Schools are helping kids in need to stay in school and succeed in life.

About Communities in Schools:

“Across the country, approximately 1 in 5 children under 18 live in poverty. These are disproportionately children of color who already struggle with issues of access and equity. Without community support, they are more at risk for missing school, dropping out and failing to earn a high school diploma. By helping our most vulnerable students stay in school and succeed in life, we are building stronger, healthier and more economically stable communities where every person is capable of reaching his or her greatest potential.”

FF: The Alligator Sport Money Clips from B.D. Jeffries

Meanwhile, the fine folks at B.D. Jeffries have a nice line of Alligator Sport Money Clips.

About the Alligator Sport Money Clips from B.D. Jeffries:

“Genuine alligator sport money clip features a clip for bills on the outside and room for credit cards on the inside. It’s compact enough to fit in a front pocket. The alligators used to produce our belts, wallets, and handbags are indigenous to the southern United States. Alligator skins vary in tile shapes and sizes. However, the majority of them have more square tiles taken from the belly and tail of the alligator. We are able to use the entire alligator skin when producing belts and wallets accounting for a larger variation in tiles.”

I have mentioned before that I have had many ideas for great books featuring photos of dogs, but I lack both the talent and the ambition to make one of them happen. Thankfully there are many others out there who produce excellent books like Upside-Down Dogs by Serena Hodson.

About Upside-Down Dogs by Serena Hodson:

“Celebrated pet photographer Serena Hodson’s silly, drooly, whimsical, and fun Upside-Down Dogs is sure to bring a smile to every dog lover’s face. Her unique perspective brings these sweet, full color photos to life on the page. Hodson takes beautiful color photographs of man’s best friend…but her furry subjects are always upside down. The results are stunning, charming, and laugh out loud adorable. No matter the breed, no matter the background, Hodson is able to capture the sweet personality of each dog she works with. There’s no better book to help someone turn their frown upside down.”

Ms. Hodson’s photographs are entertaining and provide a nice diversion for any dog lover.

Life is way too short for dollar store liquid soaps. Your hands deserve much better, like the Mint Tisane liquid soap I found from the fine folks at LAFCO New York.

About the Mint Tisane from LAFCO New York:

“Clippings of basil, eucalyptus, bay leaf, sage and mint are laid out to dry undisturbed on a sun-filled windowsill. Fresh ginger shavings and a few thorns of clove suggest this could be the makings for homemade mint tea. Spearmint and peppermint receive a healthy squeeze of lime, basil and star anise. Artfully made in Italy using only natural ingredients, our Mint Tisane liquid soap re-generates, protects and moisturizes while gently cleansing, leaving your skin luxuriously fragranced.”

The Discover the Forest campaign is designed to get young kids excited about getting outside to enjoy the natural wonders of the world around them. It sounds strange that we need to have such a campaign, but we do, as kids are increasingly spending time indoors, online and not out discovering things.

About Discover the Forest:

“This PSA campaign aims to inspire tweens (aged 8-12) and their parents to re-connect with nature, experiencing it first-hand. The campaign brings to life the joy and excitement kids have when they discover the wonders of nature, helping create interest in their environment and a lifelong relationship with it. Nature gives teens the ability to explore, use their imagination, discover new animals and plants, and engage in adventurous play. Being in nature frees them from their crazy, scheduled days and offers the ability to get lost in something totally unmanaged, unexpected and utterly surprising. Nature instills a peace and calmness they can’t experience in their daily lives, and the more they discover the natural world around them, the more they will feel connected to the world and better understand their relationship to it.”

You can help by getting involved with public lands near you.

I have a collection of plates featuring cities and historic sites I have visited. Most of these are decorative vintage items sold as souvenirs that I have amassed over the years. Now the fine folks at Not Neutral have a great collection of City Plates featuring cities from around the world that make collecting plates cool.

I like the Boston plate from Not Neutral’s City Plates collection:

“Part of our sixth series of City Plates. The theme of this sixth collection is ‘American Dreams.’ Each of the cities in the series (Boston, San Francisco, Hollywood, and Palm Springs) has inspired the spirit of the American dream. Whether it was freedom from religious persecution, the promise of fortune and fame, or the desire for a golden age of leisure that spurred the growth of these four cities, they are all landmarks—historically and architecturally— that represent the persistence of a national ethos full of ambition and optimism.”
