I visited San Antonio a while back (documented in detail on this site) and loved it. I’ve been thinking about going back when traveling makes a little more sense again. If I went out my front  door, took a right at the end of my block, and walked straight ahead for about 7 miles I would hit the Kansas City Zoo. I love the zoo, and wish I could visit on these mild spring afternoons. But for now, I will have to satisfy my desire to visit by watching the live stream of the KC Zoo’s Helzberg Penguin Plaza – which I could truly watch all day long.

About the Helzberg Penguin Plaza at the Kansas City Zoo:

“Helzberg Penguin Plaza opened its doors in October 2013 and became home to several king penguins but until this winter, those penguins had not formed love connections. In late November, our first king penguin egg was laid and parents Jilly and Dwayne kept dutiful watch over it. For king penguins, that required them to hold the delicate egg on their feet to keep it warm, taking turns doing so for the 53-day incubation period. On Sunday, their chick was ready to hatch.”

I could not stay away from London very long on my virtual tour of great museums and sites. Today, I’m heading to one of my other favorite spots in London, the Tate Britain. Thankfully for us, they have a virtual tour which allows you to walk through more than 500 years of British art.

About Tate Britain:

“When Tate first opened its doors to the public in 1897 it had just one site, displaying a small collection of British artworks. Today we have four major sites and the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art, which includes nearly 70,000 artworks.”

My dear friend Sophie was planning her triumphant return to Florence this spring, but alas, some stupid virus had other plans. So, despite rubbing that wild bore’s nose (which I will never do again) guaranteeing you will return to Florence, Sophie and I will have to settle for virtual tours, like an online visit to one of the world great treasure troves, the Uffizi Gallery.

About the Uffizi Gallery in Firenze (Florence):

“The Uffizi was designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1560 for Cosimo I de’Medici to house the Granducal Magistratures of Tuscany. Over time, the top floor loggia became an exhibition of the dynastic collection of ancient sculpture, artwork and artifacts. The eastern wing of the building incorporated the ancient Florentine church of San Pier Scheraggio and the wing to the west connected with two existing buildings, the Mint and the Loggia dei Lanzi. Vasari conceived an architectural module to be repeated all along the building: a portico flanked by two pillars, with niches on the ground floor and three windows on the upper story. In 1565, on the occasion of the marriage of his son Francesco to Giovanna d’Austria, Cosimo I asked Vasari to design a raised passageway connecting Palazzo Vecchio with Palazzo Pitti, the new residence of the family. The passage starts from the government palace, Palazzo Vecchio, goes through the Uffizi, then runs parallel to the river above a portico and crosses over the Ponte Vecchio. The Corridor continues through the facade of the church of Santa Felicita to reach the Boboli Gardens.”
